The Faculty of Economics of the University of Montenegro proudly announces The Second International Conference on Economics and Business (MICEB 2025) – powered by ALTA Group, which will be held from May 29 to 31, 2025 in Budva.

Conference topic: Shaping sustainable economies - the path to EU membership

This year's conference theme focuses on Montenegro's most important political and social goal - membership in the European Union.

The conference will open a dialogue on the most important topics for the economic and social progress of Montenegro.

On the path to membership in the European Union, it is necessary to build inclusive political and economic institutions. Why are institutions weak and how should Montenegro strengthen the capacity of the state? The power of the state and the power of society must be in balance for the country to be in the narrow corridor of freedom. What does the Montenegrin corridor look like? What structural factors are crucial for the expansion of the corridor of freedom?

Among this year's speakers, a prominent place is occupied by Professor James A. Robinson (University of Chicago), Nobel Prize in Economics winner 2024. goneProfessor Robinson won the award together with D. Acemoglu and S. Johnson from MIT for fundamental contributions to research into how institutions influence economic and social prosperity.

The MICEB conference will discuss key systemic reforms necessary to address the societal challenges facing Montenegro and the Western Balkans. The conference will provide insight into Slovenia's most important experiences with the European Union in the areas of finance, fiscal framework, energy, industrial policy and business transformation.

  • How is a commercial bank's strategy developed in the context of EU regulations? How interested are banks in financing investments and socially beneficial projects? What is the role of state development banks? How to deal with the trade-off between profit and public interest? Does the capital market have the capacity to substitute banking sources of financing?
  • What are the financial benefits of EU membership through the prism of macroeconomic indicators? Can Montenegro solve the chronic problem of foreign trade deficit? To what extent does the length of the tourist season determine the balance of payments?
