Prof. Dr. Mirković, a specialist in general and vascular surgery with a subspecialty in oncology, will soon join the Moj Lab hospital team and take over the position of Chief of Surgery, ahead of the start of operations of the hospital on Bulevar 21. maj in Donja Gorica, which is expected to open soon.
A world-class surgeon – an experience that changes the boundaries of medicine
Professor Dr. Mirković is a specialist in general and vascular surgery, with a subspecialty in oncology, and a long-time physician at the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade, where he was the head of the department of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. He is considered one of the pioneers of transplant surgery in the region, especially in the field of liver transplantation, with more than 50 successfully performed procedures.
His professional development includes training in general surgery in Prague, Miami, and Berlin, as well as several years of education at the University of Pittsburgh (USA), one of the world's leading centers for hepatobiliary and transplant surgery.
In addition to his intensive medical practice, Professor Dr. Mirković is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade. His dominant field of work and research includes oncological surgery of the pancreas, liver and biliary tract.
He is the author and co-author of more than 100 scientific papers published in the country and abroad, an active participant in the most important world and European congresses, as well as an invited lecturer in almost all countries in the region, and a member of numerous domestic and international professional and scientific associations.
Pioneering procedures in the treatment of the liver and pancreas
Professor Dr. Mirković introduced multi-organ transplantation in Serbia back in 2005, including heart, liver, and kidney transplants. He particularly excelled in performing large liver resections (three or more segments), complex bile duct surgeries, and resections of bile duct carcinoma in the liver hilus - procedures that are performed in a small number of highly specialized centers.
He was one of the first surgeons in the region to introduce minimally invasive segmental liver resections, with minimal blood loss even in extremely large and complex operations. He also developed and introduced modern surgical procedures in the treatment of acute and chronic pancreatitis, as well as new methods of treating acute pancreatitis - the field in which he received his doctorate. He was a mentor to five surgeons, four of whom are now professors at the medical school.
Liver oncology – modern protocols and team approach
A special segment of his work relates to the treatment of metastatic liver disease, using the most modern methods of preoperative preparation of patients, including biliary drainage - percutaneous and open. The most modern oncology protocols for diseases of the liver, pancreas and digestive tract will be introduced at Moj Lab Hospital, along with the formation of a hospital consultation team of experts from multiple medical fields.
For the first time in Montenegro: Integrated modern surgery
By forming a new surgical team under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Darko Mirković, Moj Lab Hospital, for the first time in Montenegrin healthcare, has unified modern surgical techniques of the digestive tract within abdominal, thoracic and orthopedic surgery, with a strong segment of endocrine surgery (thyroid and parathyroid glands) as well as breast surgery. The surgical team additionally consists of Dr. Milan Mijović, a specialist in thoracic surgery, Dr. Zoran Ražnatović, a specialist in general surgery, and Dr. Dragan Sorat, a specialist in general surgery, thus ensuring a comprehensive approach to the most complex surgical conditions.
"In parallel, the most modern oncology protocols will be applied in all the above areas, with the formation of a hospital consultation team composed of experts from various fields. In this way, patients will be provided with a team and highly coordinated approach in order to make optimal decisions about further diagnostic and therapeutic procedures," emphasizes Professor Dr. Mirković.
The arrival of Professor Dr. Mirković and the formation of such a team bring multiple benefits – not only for patients, who in Montenegro will have access to extremely complex surgeries that are performed in a small number of centers in the region, but also for local doctors and specialists, who will be able to continue their education and work with top experts. This step forward positions Moj Lab Hospital as a new reference center for modern liver and pancreas surgery and significantly contributes to the development of the Montenegrin healthcare system, with a focus on high standards of quality, safety and a clearly organized healthcare process – from the first examination to the control after the intervention.
