The route takes you through the Durmitor National Park and the Piva Nature Park. Starting from the town centre, the journey continues through surreal places such as Štuoc, at an elevation of 1952 m, the highest point of the Durmitor Ring.
Along the Tara River Canyon, the route then passes through the village of Mala Crna Gora. After Mala Crna Gora, the road descends into the Sušica River Canyon, 15 km long and up to 700 meters deep. At the valley’s bottom lies Sušičko Lake, which is seasonal and visible only during spring and early summer.
On the other side of the canyon, the route leads into the Piva Nature Park, a protected area covering 325,000 m2 and the first nature park in Montenegro. Ascending steeply through the Piva mountain plateau, the route then traverses the heart of Durmitor, where the panorama constantly changes, offering new perspectives and views of the massif’s peaks.
The southern side of Durmitor features its valleys, Todorov Do and Dobri Do, with the iconic Sedlena Greda peak dominating in the distance and the famous Sedlo (1907 m) beneath it. Before concluding in the centre of Žabljak, the route winds around the southern and eastern slopes of Savin Kuk (2313 m). The route is marked with the number 2.

VIEWPOINTS: On the Durmitor massif, there is a large number of viewpoints that offer phenomenal panoramic experiences, views of the deep canyons of the Tara and Sušica rivers, glacial lakes, coniferous forests, vast meadows, and surrounding peaks. We recommend some of them:
Ćurevac (1625 m) – in case you’re not a hiker but wish to relish in astonishing views, then the ideal choice is the viewpoint Ćurevac. An asphalt road leads you from the centre of Žabljak towards the village of Tepca, and after a 7 km drive, you reach the parking area. From the parking lot, a hiking trail takes you to the top of Ćurevac, covering a distance of about 1.1 km and requiring close to an hour of walking. The rocky trail, at certain points quite narrow, skirts the edge of the Tara Canyon. During rainy weather, the path may become slippery, so extra caution is advised. Ćurevac welcomes you with a panoramic 360-degree view and a lovely sight of the Tara River and the village of Tepca.
Savin Kuk (2313 m) is one of the most beautiful, recognisable and photographed, and of course, most visited peaks of Durmitor. Savin Kuk is part of an incredible panorama, with a fantastic vista that Durmitor is famous for. This viewpoint can be reached by a cable car that stops just a hundred metres below the summit, near Savina Voda. Savin Kuk is named after Rastko Nemanjić, whose spiritual name was Sava, and who was declared a saint (Saint Sava). He frequently visited Durmitor and Savin Kuk, with locals saying it was his favourite peak.
Crvena Greda (2164 m), situated above Jablan Lake, is an authentic peak with a view of the Jezerska Plateau and Žabljak. In the rear section, the positioning of the ridge and trail is oriented towards the Durmitor massif.
Mali Međed (2223 m), though not one of the highest peaks of Durmitor, is iconic due to its position above Black Lake. It has become a symbol of Žabljak, appearing on postcards, calendars, and now online. From Black Lake, the Međed massif (Mali and Veliki) resembles the figure of a bear, which inspired the name (međed meaning bear).
The summit of Mali Međed offers magnificent views of Black Lake, the surroundings of Žabljak, the Tara Canyon, Veliki Štuoc, Crvena Greda, Čvorov Bogaz, Obla Glava, Rbatina, Bezimeni Vrh, Bobotov Kuk, Katun Lokvice, Minin Bogaz, Terzin Bogaz, Bandijerna, Veliki Međed, Šljeme, and Savin Kuk. From there, hikers can continue to the adjacent peak, Veliki Međed, along the ridge, though this route is demanding and not recommended for inexperienced hikers.
Caution is advised during the ascent of Mali Međed, particularly in wet conditions due to the slippery terrain.
Sedlena Greda (2227 m) is part of the southern section of the Durmitor massif, alongside Ranisava, Boljske Grede, Lojanik, and Ružica. Its unique shape dominates the pastures of Dobri Do.
From Sedlena Greda's summit, an incredible view of multiple peaks opens up, including Prutaš, Bobotov Kuk, Bandijerna, Savin Kuk, Ranisava, Moračke Mountains, Boljske Grede, Vojnik, Buručkovac, Lojanik, Ružica, Volujak, Bioč, and Maglić.
Prutaš (2393 m) is a striking mountain, known for its vertical, twig-like formations that cascade like waterfalls down its southern slope. This imagery perpetuates the legend of young Todor, his love for Ružica, the fairies' cruelty, and the shepherd's revenge.
The summit of Prutaš provides a spectacular view of Todorov Do, Volujak, Bioč, Maglić, and the two lakes of the Škrka Valley, which offer the most picturesque vistas.
Stožina (1908 m), located above the Pošćenska Valley, acts as a gateway to southern Durmitor. The area around Stožina is awe-inspiring, with three lakes—Valovito, Modro, and Srablje—adding to the beauty of the landscape.
From the summit of Stožina, a magnificent panorama unveils, showcasing numerous Montenegrin mountains, including Sinjajevina, Tali, Moračke Mountains, Durmitor's peaks, Ranisava, Sedlena Greda, Uvita Greda, Šljeme, and Savin Kuk. Additionally, one can admire the surroundings of Žabljak, Njegovuđa, Riblje and Vražje Lake, Pošćensko Lake, and the Pošćenska Valley with its three lakes.
Žabljak is located approximately 130 km from Podgorica Airport (Montenegro), 160 km from Tivat Airport (Montenegro), 200 km from Dubrovnik Airport (Croatia), and 180 km from Tirana Airport (Albania).
