The giant jellyfish (Stygiomedusa gigantea), one of the largest invertebrates, was filmed this Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico at a depth of one kilometer, reports Express.hr.
Mark Benfield, a professor at the University of Louisiana, confirmed the authenticity of this video, although it is not yet known who took it. Benfield himself managed to photograph a giant jellyfish in 2010 at the same location, and is considered one of the greatest experts on this mysterious creature.
Since it was discovered as a species, the giant jellyfish has been seen only 115 times.
The rim at the very top can grow up to 1,5 meters, and the massive arms can reach a length of up to 6 meters.
Unlike their "relatives", the arms of this jellyfish do not have burning cells that can burn. However, scientists believe that the arms are still functional during hunting.
