Japanese carmakers Toyota and Nissan have recalled 6,5 million vehicles worldwide in the latest case involving Takata airbags, which have been linked to several deaths.
On Thursday, both Honda and Daihatsu complained about airbag problems.
These two companies announced that they are "recalling" about 5 million cars worldwide to examine the airbags and eliminate possible defects.
Toota, the world's largest carmaker, says the recall of nearly five million vehicles covers 35 models built between 2003 and 2007, while Nissan claims it has recalled 1,56 million vehicles built from 2004 to 2008, also due to the company's faulty airbags. Takata, reports SEEbiz.
Nissan said the vehicle recall will affect many markets, including Japan, Europe and North America.
The Japanese automakers' announcement comes after 20 million cars from a range of manufacturers including General Motors and Honda have already been recalled due to the risk that Takata's airbags could deploy unnecessarily and explode, with potentially fatal consequences for occupants.
Despite the vehicle recall, Nissan posted solid financial results, posting a 17,6 percent jump in net profit last fiscal year to 457,6 billion yuan, or $4,2 billion, thanks to a weak yen and new model launches.
The company expects earnings to grow to 485 billion yuan or 5,75 billion dollars this year.
Toyota said last week that its annual net profit jumped to a record $18,1 billion.
Takata, which operates in 20 countries, is one of the largest manufacturers of airbags in the world and is a key supplier to major car manufacturers.
Faced with numerous lawsuits and government investigations, Takata admitted that the crisis affected its results, but also added that it believes it will make a net profit of 20 billion yuan, or $208 million, in the current business year.
