Mark Zuckerberg, the owner and founder of the social network Facebook, announced the success of the first test flight of a solar drone designed to provide Internet access in remote areas.
The test of the prototype, named "Aquila", was carried out in Great Britain.
The solar-powered Akila drone is wider than a narrow-body Boeing 737 (one passenger aisle between seats) and weighs almost as much as a small car, Facebook said.
It will be able to be maintained in flight for several months at an altitude of at least 18.000 meters, it was announced today on the web portal lematin.ch
Internet giant Google has a similar project "lun" (Loon), which it has already tested with the help of balloons for flying.
