Every year, the TED conference invites the world's leading thinkers and practitioners to say what they have to say in 18 minutes. Their lectures can then be accessed for free via the site www.ted.com.
Among the TED speakers so far are: Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philip Stark, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweila, Isabel Allende and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Gordon Brown.
The annual TED conference is held in Long Beach, California, and is simulcast live in Palm Springs; TED Global takes place every year in Great Britain. TEDx is the global reaction to the annual TED conferences.
TED has allowed organizers around the world to create their own local conferences in the TED format and thus stimulate dialogue within communities, organizations and individuals.
