POPE Benedict XVI. praised social networks and the Internet today, because they offer a new way for a spiritual connection with God.
"Pages, programs and networks can help a person in prayer and meditation," he said in a message on the occasion of the 46th World Day of Social Communication.
"Short messages, often no longer than a biblical verse, can be used to express deep thoughts," the Pope said, referring to communication via Twitter, ANSA writes.
But he also warned about the value of silence in the age of mass communication. "Silence is an integral part of communication," said the Pope.
"Communication is a kind of game between silence and words. When they exclude each other, communication deteriorates.
When we remain silent, we enable the other person to speak, to express himself, and to ourselves so that we do not remain tied exclusively to our words and our ideas and thus remain deprived of their appropriate questioning.
This opens up space for mutual listening and it becomes possible to establish a deeper human relationship," the Pope added in the message.
