In the works on the ancient thermal bath in the ruins of Pompeii, the skeleton of a child who died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD was discovered.
Pompeii director Masimo Osana said the skeleton, believed to be that of a seven- or eight-year-old child, was found in February during work to secure the largest ancient bath at the major archaeological site.
Taken for study and a DNA test to determine the sex of the child.
Osana said it is likely that archaeologists found the skeleton during excavations in the 19th century, as the leg bones were neatly placed near the pelvis, but that for an unknown reason they did not take it away.
Experts believe that the child was killed by volcanic gases.
