The recent hacker attack on the social network Facebook affected five million Europeans from 50 million accounts affected in total, European Commissioner for Justice Vera Jurova told France Press.
The company Facebook stated that it has taken measures to eliminate the security problem and that it has informed the competent authorities.
According to the founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, hackers managed to access information contained in user profiles.
"I will know more in a few hours or a few days, but according to what we know, five million Europeans have been affected among the 50 million affected profiles, which is an incredible number," Jurova said at a European meeting in Luxembourg.
This large-scale hacker attack has again fueled criticism of the social network, which has already been seriously shaken by various scandals, especially regarding the protection of personal data.
Jurova said that Facebook's management should know if it controls the situation.
She added that Facebook's size makes it difficult to manage, but that it has to because it collects data and makes huge money by using our private lives as a commodity.
Jurova said that Facebook's quick detection of the new hacking attack shows that new European data protection rules that came into effect this year are working.
