Today, the Iranian president called on US President-elect Joe Biden to "make up for earlier mistakes" and return the US to the framework of the nuclear agreement signed by Tehran with world powers, the Iranian state agency reported today.
President Hassan Rouhani's statement marks the highest-level reaction yet from Iran to the news that Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris won the Nov. 3 presidential election.
"Now the possibility has opened for the next American administration to make up for the mistakes of the past and return to the path of fulfilling international agreements through respect for international norms," Rouhani said, as reported by the IRNA news agency.
Under President Donald Trump, tensions between the US and Iran have escalated and reached a peak earlier this year.
One of Trump's moves was to unilaterally withdraw the US from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, according to which Iran limited uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
Since then, the US has re-imposed sanctions on Iran, which have hit its economy hard, further threatened by the coronavirus epidemic.
In an effort to put pressure on Europe to find a way around sanctions, Iran has slowly dropped restrictions under the nuclear deal.
"Through the heroic resistance of the imposed economic war, the people of Iran proved that the American policy of maximum pressure is doomed to failure," Rouhani said, adding that Iran considers its strategy to be constructive cooperation with the world.
