Access to Mamula Fortress and the island of Lastavica will be disabled in the future in order to clean the site and carry out preparatory work necessary as an introduction to the planned reconstruction of the building, which should be carried out in accordance with urban-technical and conservation conditions.
PR advisor of OHM Mamula Montenegro, Dragana Bećirović, said that the reasons for such a decision are multiple, starting with the most important - preventive, because it is not possible to provide security, first of all for visitors, and then for the location.
"We already had examples of the devastation of what we did on the island – from the destruction of the protective covers on the wells and the placement and removal of the stonework belonging to the fortress to the destruction of the placed boards and the like," said Bećirović.
The company OHM Mamula Montenegro has, as she reminded, formally and legally taken over the location.
"We have approval for preparatory works and an elaboration on preparatory works, which are the legal conditions for opening the construction site, and therefore the prohibition of access to unauthorized persons. The decision will be in force until the completion of the works," said Bećirović.
She announced that the island and the fortress will be open to the public and free access after the completion of the reconstruction.
"Not only will there be no restrictions, but we will also encourage visits to the island. The company, as before, will regularly inform the public about the status of works on the island, respecting the legitimate interest of the public in the progress of our joint venture," said Bećirović.
On the basis of a permit for large-scale preparatory works issued by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, OHM Mamula started in September of last year on the preparation of the ground for the reconstruction and adaptation of the Mamula fortifications and turning it into a high-class hotel with a historical and memorial gallery.
The reconstruction of the Mamula fortress and the island is planned through the main project, which is currently being developed in accordance with the previously issued conservation and urban-technical conditions and the highest international standards of environmental protection, with maximum preservation of the original physiognomy of the area and all found elements of the fortified complex.
All previous preparatory activities on the island of Lastavica and the fortress of Mamula were carried out in consultation with the competent institutions, whose representatives were fully informed about the status and preparation of technical documentation and were on the island during the various stages of the research carried out by the international expert team of the company OHM Mamula Montenegro.
The multidisciplinary team of designers engaged in this work, guided by the principle of applying minimal spatial interventions, carefully and thoughtfully analyzes all segments and the complexity of the entire object in order to carefully and measuredly adapt the logic of its original organization to the new function and time.
