Former Uruguayan international Diego Forlan is set to take over as coach of the Uruguayan senior national team, following the departure of Marcelo Bielsa, the president of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) Ignacio Alonso has announced.
Alonso told 'Teledoce' television that an agreement with Forlan is close and that the legendary striker should lead the A team, as well as the U-20 national team.
"If we reach an agreement with Diego Forlan in the coming hours, he will be the coach of the under-20 team in parallel and lead the A team in the upcoming friendly matches. He is excited about the opportunity, although there are still a few details to be resolved," Alonso said, as reported by Ekip.
The plan is for Forlan to lead Uruguay during the national team windows in September, October and November, as well as in friendly matches until March 2027. After that, the AUF will decide whether to entrust him with the continuation of his mandate or appoint a new coach.
The decision will also partly depend on the results of internal elections in the Uruguayan federation at the end of the year.
Forlan (47) is a legend of Uruguayan football. He played 112 games for the national team and scored 36 goals, and ended his career in 2019. He has had two short stints as a coach so far - he led Peñarol in 2020, when he sat on the bench for 11 games, and then Atletico Atenas in the Uruguayan second division in 2021, for 12 matches.
