If you have stored the winter tires that you recently removed from the vehicle in the garage, basement or attic, and did not pay attention to how you placed them, it would be a good idea to check their position and condition, experts advise.
"Strong deformations during a long storage time can lead to bursting of the tire under pressure," say the tire specialists at the "Castellana" company.
"The properties of the tire can change, which affects the final life of the tires, especially if the temperature is above 25 degrees Celsius or below 0 degrees. Storage in a cold room has no negative effect on the tires".
When handling tires, never drop them from a height greater than 1,5 meters. Tires can be damaged in a fall, in the area of the tire tread.
"In order to preserve the properties and shape of the tires, you need to fulfill several not too demanding conditions. First, you need to store them in a dry place, so that they are not in direct contact with concrete or asphalt. Then, turn the container so that they are not exposed to the sun, because then they would be exposed to extreme temperatures and UV radiation that can weaken the structure. The ideal temperature for storing tires is around 15 degrees," explains Castellani.
The warehouse or the room where the tires are stored must not be wet so that condensation does not appear on the tires.
Also, the surface should be clean, and the tires should be protected from substances that could endanger them due to their chemical composition, such as oils, fats or antifreeze.
Finally, we remind you that if you store tires without rims, you should place them upright on the floor or shelf, i.e. in the same position as they are on the car. Every few months, they should be rotated a little, so that they do not deform under their own weight.

If you store tires mounted on a rim, you can put them flat, one on top of the other, and not more than four pieces in one pile. Rim tires can also be stored by hanging them on a horizontal bar. It is recommended to inflate the tire to a pressure 0,5 bar higher than prescribed.

"A lot of people know the importance of proper tire storage for safety, but there are also those who do not take this into account or think that any tire position is appropriate," reports the experience of Castellana employees.
An increasingly popular solution for those who do not have the conditions to store tires in their own apartment is the storage of tires in specialized warehouses, so-called tire hotels.
"Every year, more and more clients decide to entrust us with tires for storage, we even have cases where they send them from other cities. People know that their tires are safe there, and the storage period is valid for the whole year. Many companies also decide to store them, which have a large vehicle fleet, but no storage space."
The price of storing tires according to all regulations in the Castellane warehouse is 15 to 25 euros, depending on the size of the wheel.
