According to published data, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla surpassed one of the most reputable German premium car brands, Audi, in sales last year.
Tesla delivered 1,79 million vehicles to customers last year, while Audi sold 1,67 million cars, 12 percent less than the year before, SEEbiz reports.
Tesla had a rough year last year, posting its first annual delivery decline in more than a decade and narrowly retaining its lead over China's BYD (BYD).
In Europe, sales of electric vehicles have fallen short of expectations after several countries cut subsidies. German automakers are struggling with weak demand for luxury cars in China, where the recovery remains uncertain, as well as competition from local manufacturers.
Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, as well as many other carmakers, have warned of falling or slower profit growth due to market difficulties.
Audi's sales fell in the German, Chinese and North American markets, and deliveries of fully electric models last year fell by around eight percent to around 164.
