Chinese manufacturer XPeng is recalling more than 47.000 of its P7+ electric cars due to a potentially dangerous problem with incorrectly connected cables in the autonomous driving system.
The P7+ sedan, launched in 2024 and priced at 186.900 yuan (22.400 euros), has an "artificial intelligence driving assistance" system, according to XPeng's website.
China's market regulator said that starting Monday, XPeng will repair 47.490 P7+s produced between August 20, 2024, and April 27, 2025, free of charge. That's more than 70 percent of the total number sold.
Chinese technology companies and automakers have invested billions of dollars in autonomous driving technology in recent years, and "intelligent driving" is a novelty in China's highly competitive market.
The government has warned manufacturers that safety regulations will be enforced more strictly after an accident that killed three students, raising concerns about the cars' advertising of their ability to drive themselves.
XPeng has announced that its P7+ will soon be available in several European countries, including Germany and France.
