Robot taxis from startup Waymo will now be able to carry passengers on highways in the San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles areas, a first for fully autonomous vehicles.

Before launching its service, Vejmo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company, announced today, tested robotic vehicles on highways in 2023, transporting some of its employees.

The company plans to later offer freeway rides in and around the cities of Austin and Atlanta, where Waymo robot taxis are already taking passengers on city streets.

Waymo now operates in a zone of about 100 kilometers that includes the cities of San Francisco and San Jose.

For now, robotaxis from Tesla, Amazon's Zuks, and May Mobility are limited to city driving and do not go on highways.
