The car is the most important means of transport in Germany – but it is increasingly parked. On average, it is used less and less every day, according to a study commissioned by the Ministry of Transport.
Almost half of cars don't move at all on an average day – compared to just a third in 2008. At the same time, people are walking more.
According to the study, electric cars are almost no different from vehicles with conventional engines in terms of usage patterns, annual mileage, and length of individual trips.
A previous study from 2017 showed that electric cars were mainly used for short distances. Today, the share of longer trips, at 13 percent, is almost equal to the length of trips made by vehicles with internal combustion engines.
The study, according to the ministry, is based on a survey across Germany in more than 1.000 cities and municipalities.
Between May 2023 and June last year, more than 218.000 households and around 421.000 people were surveyed.
