The "Carbuzz" portal has identified ten common driving practices that significantly shorten the lifespan of popular models such as BMW, Volkswagen, Toyota, Renault and Peugeot, and can also seriously strain the household budget.
Typical mistakes that damage your car
Idling
It's a myth that the engine needs to be warmed up at idle. The engine warms up more slowly when it's not under load, so it's not a good idea to let it idle.
The best way to warm up your engine to the right temperature is to drive slowly. Idling only prolongs the process, reports HAK Revija.
Braking with the left foot
In a car with an automatic transmission, it's not a good idea to brake with your left foot. If you brake with your left foot while accelerating with your right foot, it puts a strain on the transmission and increases wear.
Excessive clutch use
It is important not to overuse the clutch in a manual transmission car. Improper use will shorten the life of the clutch.
The clutch should only be used when changing gears and starting the car.
Improper use of brakes
If you're using multiple brakes to maintain speed, you're doing it wrong. When you use your brakes incorrectly, they overheat and wear out faster. Instead of braking, you can shift into a lower gear or plan your ride better by lifting the accelerator pedal in time.
Speeding through speeding police cars
Driving fast over speed bumps can damage the wheels and suspension.
Driving at maximum speed
A car engine is designed for maximum speed. Most manufacturers have built in a safety margin. However, if you drive at maximum speed when the engine is not at the right temperature, you risk damaging it. Therefore, it is important to drive at high speeds only after the engine has been running for a while.
Too much fuel in the tank
Never put more fuel in your car than you need. If you put too much fuel in your car, the tank can overflow and damage other parts of the car.
Long-term parking
Tires will wear out, small animals can get into the car, and brake discs will rust. The car needs to be driven. That's why it should be done at least once a week.
Car overloading
It's never a good idea to overload your car. The suspension, tires, and shock absorbers will be under more strain. The engine will also have to work harder and use more fuel. The car is designed to handle a maximum load. Overloading will wear out your car.
Watch the road.
Many drivers tend to look at their passengers while they are talking, scrolling through messages on their mobile phones... Don't do this, first of all for your safety, and then for the health of your vehicle. Because of this, you can miss potholes, speed bumps and hit them at full speed.
