Reporters Without Borders announced that the acquittal of Jov Martinović from drug-trafficking charges is excellent news for free media.
The judgment was pronounced today in the Appellate Court of Montenegro.
"After seven years of legal battle, the Appellate Court of Montenegro ruled what investigative journalists and Reporters Without Borders have always said: Jovo Martinović is not guilty of drug trafficking," writes the Twitter account of Reporters Without Borders.
They added that they are also asking the Supreme Court to confirm today's verdict.
The Supreme Court of Montenegro previously annulled the second-instance judgment of the Court of Appeal regarding the case of Jova Martinović and sent the case back for a new decision.
On October 8, 2020, in a retrial in the Podgorica High Court, Martinović was convicted of mediation in narcotics smuggling, and acquitted of the original charge of creating a criminal organization.
Martinović then said that the verdict by which he was declared guilty was actually support for drug trafficking and organized crime, explaining that the man who was caught with 20 kilograms of drugs was forgiven in exchange for false testimony against him.
