Šejla Bakija's father: Đokaj followed her constantly after the breakup

Šaban Bakija, the father of the murdered Šejla, testified today in the High Court in Podgorica in the continuation of the trial of Ilir Đokaj, who is on trial for the criminal offense of aggravated murder.

He said the defendant followed her around after the two broke up.

He stated that his daughter had freedom and support from him and his family. He said that although they are of the Islamic faith, no one's religion bothers them. He added that his godfather is of the Orthodox faith.

"Never in our life, neither mentally nor physically, did anyone from the family, not even I, abuse Sheila. Even more than that, we had a friendly relationship. She had even a little more freedom, even if it is viewed differently in our environment because it is a conservative environment. Like any father, I tried to guide her through conversation," said Šaban Bakija.

He stated that Šejla Bakija and Ilir Đokaj moved to live in Budva and that he gave them an apartment there.

"First they lived in his house. They wanted to become independent. Ilir mentioned that he would sell the car, if they could manage. I said, since he was a tenant, that I would give them an apartment in Budva and that they didn't have to pay anything to begin with, bills and the like, that they were exempt from everything. They were there until the moment he called me to come pick her up. He told me they can't be together anymore. That was after five months," Bakija said.

After he arrived in Budva, he found Đokaj in front of the building, which surprised him because he thought he had left the apartment and left.

"I asked where Šejla was, and she then locked herself in the apartment. He then said he was going upstairs to get some diplomas, I said I would pick them up. However, there were no diplomas, apparently the goal was just to get into the apartment."

And since then, the defendant Đokaj began to persecute his daughter.

According to the indictment, Đokaj Ilir killed Šejla Bakija (19) and wounded her father Šaban (42), on the Karabuško polje in Tuzi.

The defendant said at the trial three days ago that she wrote in detail about their struggle to survive and that she stated that his cross did not bother her.

"Your Honor, for the sake of both families, friends and relatives, I am obliged to tell my story and Sheila's, even though I am now here in front of you just an empty black hole of a man. I am aware that I have caused misery to both my and Šejla's family and if I could turn back time, I would have taken my own life, if only my Šejla had remained alive", said the defendant Đokaj in his defense.

He noted that the family of the victim Sheila was against their love relationship.

"They said he is a painter, but of a different faith. Only her mother helped us in the beginning. She helped us in every possible way. And then when she saw that we had a serious relationship, when she realized that there was no way to separate us, she wanted to forbid it from me", claims the defendant Đokaj.

Then, in his defense, he read some quotes from Šejla Bakija's diary.

"My children will celebrate several times a year, and I will be happy. I do not care about his cross, No because since I have loved him, he has been my faith. If I renounce him, what is left for us, to look for ourselves in others and wander in vain ".

"They banned the man I love, burned my hair, drew blood. It's a bit sad that I'm saying this, but it's true. I hope that R. won't go through all that I've witnessed and what I'm going through. I couldn't start life without her, I just think that will confuse her too".

"While listening to my mother's harsh words in my head, I just think how to die, I would break everything".

The indictment of state prosecutor Ana Radović states that Đokaj committed the criminal offense of aggravated murder under Article 144, point 4 of the Criminal Code of Montenegro, the criminal offense of attempted murder under Article 143 in connection with Article 20 of the Criminal Code of Montenegro, and the criminal offense of illegal possession of weapons and explosives. material from Article 403 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code of Montenegro.

"Because on September 30, 2021, at around 15.15:7,65 p.m., in Tuzi, in the Karabuško polje settlement, he was aware of his actions, the execution of which he wanted, knowing that his actions were prohibited, and deliberately took the life of the injured Baki Šejla. out of base motives, and then deliberately tried to take the life of injured Baki Saban. In the way that on the terrace of the injured party's family home, out of reckless selfishness and a sense of possessiveness, the injured Šeila, who refused to renew the extramarital union with the defendant, which had been broken off a few months earlier, during which time the defendant pursued the injured party directly and by phone, informing her that she was not among them that her life was almost in his hands, from a gun of an unknown brand, caliber XNUMX millimeters, which he held and carried in a public place without authorization and for which he did not have a weapon license issued, after the conversation during which the injured B. Š. repeated her will that she did not want to renew her union with him and that she did not love him, in the presence of the victim's father, fired five projectiles in the direction of Baki Šeila, which hit her in the area of ​​the chest, left arm and left leg, from which projectiles she sustained injuries severe and life-threatening injuries, resulting in death on the same day. After that, and at the moment when the victim Bakija Šaban approached him in an attempt to grab his hand, the defendant turned the gun towards the victim and fired one projectile in the direction of the chest of the victim, which hit him, after which he moved away towards his vehicle. That, after the victim Šaban followed him, the defendant, again, fired two projectiles, one of which hit the victim in the abdomen and left leg, while the other projectile hit a pillar on the terrace of the house, during which the victim suffered a particularly severe injury. serious and life-threatening bodily injury in the form of a gunshot wound to the chest, a gunshot wound to the abdomen and a gunshot wound to the left leg," the indictment states.

Đokaj: Everything blurred before my eyes and I shoot aimlessly

In the continuation of his defense, the accused Ilir Đokaj said that before he shot, he endured insults, humiliation and threats for more than half an hour, and that he "kept his head down".

"Grandma from Šeila told me - speak like a man, but you are not a man but a little man. From then on, I couldn't understand a word of what they were saying to me. I just want to get out of there. And then I notice that Shabo says something and gets up from the chair, then I get up too and I hear myself saying: 'Let us live' and I repeat that sentence several times. I saw Shabo grab his belt from the back. I then take out my gun and repeat, and Shabo hits me in the head so hard that I thought I was hit by something. Everything is blurred before my eyes and I shoot without any aim. I'm just pressing the shutter button because everything is a blur. I noticed Sheila lying down, and that Shabo was walking towards me, and I pressed the trigger again, I moved five meters away from the terrace, and Shabo was moving towards me again, and then I shot out of fear because I saw that he was holding his hands, and I shot him," said the defendant. Djokaj.

He added that after that he turned the gun on himself, because he wanted to kill himself, but that the gun jammed.

"I got into my car and drove to the center of Tuzi. I drive straight and stop in front of the police station. I got out of the car, stood next to the container and called out and shouted, I want to surrender but no one from the police comes out and I'm covered in blood, I throw the gun in the container and go to the fountain like that and wash myself there. I start on foot from the fountain, I don't even know where, I just walk and want to take my own life. I go towards Dečić hill, I climb it for a while, and only then I could cry at the top of my voice and scream calling for Šejla", the accused stated.

"I did not notice my sin, but I live it and I will die with it. If that means anything to anyone in this courtroom, the sin and remorse I live with is a sentence I will have to serve until my last breath. I deeply regret," said the defendant Ilir Đokaj in his defense.
