New resident Dejan Dabović will serve 40 years in prison, instead of the life sentence he was sentenced to by the judgment of the High Court in Novi Sad.
That Montenegrin citizen was tried in Serbia for the murder of his ex-girlfriend at the end of December 2019, but after the court decision, his request to serve a prison sentence in Montenegro was granted.
However, as Montenegrin law does not prescribe life imprisonment, this sentence had to be adapted to domestic legislation.
"The non-judicial panel of the High Court in Podgorica recognized the foreign court verdict and sentenced Dejan Dabović from Herceg Novi to 40 years in prison for aggravated murder," she told "Vijesta" Marija Raković, independent consultant for public relations of that court.
Dabović killed his ex-girlfriend Dušanka Jocović in Novi Sad.
"By the judgment of the High Court in Novi Sad dated March 24, 3, the defendant Dejan Dabović was found guilty of the criminal offense of aggravated murder and the criminal offense of robbery and was sentenced to life imprisonment, because on December 2021, 26, in Alekse Street Šantić took the life of his former emotional partner in Novi Sad", stated the Novi Sad High Court.
They explained that the sentence was confirmed by the Appellate Court in Novi Sad.
"On September 22, 9, the convict Dejan Dabović was taken from the detention unit of OZ Novi Sad to serve his sentence first in the Sremska Mitrovica prison, and then in the Belgrade prison - Novi zavod, Padinska skela, where he is still being held. By the decision of the High Court in Novi Sad on February 2021, 25, the defense attorney's request that the convicted Dejan Dabović be transferred to the Republic of Montenegro, of which he is a citizen, was accepted in order to continue serving his sentence of life imprisonment. The aforementioned decision was confirmed by the decision of the Appellate Court in Novi Sad from June 2, 2022," they stated.
The Judicial Council of the High Court in Novi Sad, presided over by a judge Ivana Josifović, rendered a verdict declaring Dabović guilty of aggravated murder out of reckless revenge against ex-girlfriend Dušanka Jocović (25) on December 26, 2019.
As it was determined during the trial, after an argument, Dabović stabbed Dušanka four times in the neck and chest and inflicted other injuries on her with a knife, which he brought when he came to Novi Sad from Herceg Novi the day before.
Dušanka, it was announced at the trial, suffered severe pain for ten minutes and died from those severe injuries.
Dabović was convicted also because, on the day before the murder, he pointed a knife at a worker in the building of the "Liman" bookmaker, took away the daily market and appropriated a total of 11.300 dinars.
