Montenegrin skipper Miloš Radonjić (33) was arrested on an international warrant in Trieste on October 6, and the American authorities charge him with "coordinating, planning and transporting cocaine shipments" from South America to Europe, all Italian media reports.
That suspect, it is written in part of the Italian media, denied guilt, claiming that it was another person with the same first and last name.
"Radonjić told the Italian authorities that he is not the person they are looking for, but that it is a case of homonymy. The Court of Appeal in Trieste, after approving his arrest, conducted the necessary checks, the results of which refuted the claims of the Montenegrin skipper," the local media wrote.
Radonjić was arrested at the hotel in Trieste where he was staying before the regatta that was held on October 8.
Italian media reports that no one noticed that the boat was steered by his brother Marco, who is normally in charge of tactics during the regatta.
The international arrest warrant, Italian media write, was issued on September 15 by the United States of America (USA), whose security agencies were investigating him.
"He is suspected to be one of the members of an international organized crime group."
According to information published in the Italian media, Radonjić's fingerprints correspond to those obtained during the investigation, his passport number corresponds to the one obtained from the USA, as well as his phone number.
