In this morning's action "Izvor" in Rožaje, four people were arrested, and almost 3.000 packs of cigarettes were confiscated, the Police Administration announced.
Ernad Murić (35), Edin Murić (33), Muamer Mujević (29) and Enis Kajević (47), all from Rožaj, were arrested on suspicion of having committed the criminal offense of prolonged smuggling and they will be brought to the state to the prosecutor for further jurisdiction.
The Police Directorate stated that the officers of the Department for the Fight against Crime (SBPK), the Department for the Fight against Corruption, Economic Crime and the Conduct of Financial Investigations, carried out the action codenamed "Source" and other operational tactical measures and actions related to suppression and detection of criminal offenses related to the smuggling of excise goods and cross-border crime in the area of Rožaj, which resulted in the breaking of the smugglers' chain.
That institution officially confirmed the information that "Vijesti" published this morning about the action in Rožaje.
"Searches of apartments were carried out in five locations, as well as a search of a cargo motor vehicle, during which items suspected of being used to commit the criminal offense of smuggling and illegal trade were found and confiscated. Means of communication were found - radio links and mobile devices, also, a so-called bunker was found in a cargo motor vehicle, which is suspected of being used for the transport of smuggled cigarettes," the Police Administration said in a statement.
It is added that as part of this case, codenamed "Source", eight criminal charges were filed against 16 persons suspected of criminal offenses of smuggling and illegal trade, during which 2.895 packs of cigarettes worth around 70.000 euros were confiscated, as well as other excise goods worth about 5.000 euros.
"Vijesti" announced this morning that an action to suppress cigarette smuggling is being carried out in Rožaje, and that SBPK members are searching several buildings owned by suspects of smuggling tobacco products.
