The legal team of Duško Knežević, the president of the Atlas Group and a businessman who was recently detained after Britain extradited him to Montenegro, which claimed him, is very concerned about his safety, said one of the defense attorneys, Edward Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald, referring to the statement of the Minister of Justice Andrej Milović, who stated on February 11 that he could not guarantee Knežević's safety and that there was a real danger of retaliation from people who were dissatisfied with the revelations he published about corruption, told A1 that that statement is very disturbing.
"We are very worried about Knežević's safety. We are worried, as the Minister of Justice himself was worried, and we hope to ensure, by presenting the case to the European Court and probably the UN panel on arbitrary detention, international supervision of the case", said the lawyer.
Fitzgerald reminded that Knežević's case is pending before the European Court, and announced that he will visit the businessman at UIKS in Spuz with his colleague Tobi Kedman.
"First we want to make sure that he is as safe as possible and that he is treated properly. Second, we want to get his guidance for the further course of the case before the European Court as well as the UN Panel on Arbitrary Detention. We also want to express our support for Knežević and our concern for his safety and that he be treated fairly now that he has returned to Montenegro. We hope he will be released soon. We are here to express our solidarity with him, to make sure he is being treated properly and to do everything we can to raise his case to the international level," said Fitzgerald.
The lawyer said that the court in Montenegro considered that Milović's statement did not have an appropriate confirmation of the context.
"But the reality is that it was the duty of the Montenegrin authorities to come forward and inform the English court that they were concerned about his safety. They should not seek to return to Montenegro and detain someone whose safety they cannot guarantee. So we hope that they will ensure his safety, that they will take every step to ensure safety, but it is a very sad day for British justice when he is extradited in a situation where the Minister of Justice could not personally guarantee his safety. So he should never be extradited in those circumstances. of course, the question we are putting to the European Court," explained Fitzgerald.
Three indictments were brought against Duško Knežević in Montenegro - for organizing a criminal group, money laundering and abuse of position in business operations.
