The Ministry of Justice guarantees the safety of Duško Knežević while he is in the Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions (UIKS), the Ministry of Justice announced.
The Minister of Justice of Montenegro, Andrej Milović, and the director of UIKS, Darko Vukčević, held a meeting today with the British lawyers of Duško Knežević, Tobi Kadman and Edward Fitzgerald, where they discussed the conditions in custody and security of Knežević, as well as the possibility of his British lawyers also represent in cases that are conducted before Montenegrin courts.
The Ministry of Justice announced that Knežević was placed in a neat cell with an area of eight square meters, which has a bed, clean bed linen, a separate toilet, a table and chairs, which is considered the CPT standard for single-bed cells.
"While he is in UIKS, the Ministry of Justice guarantees Mr. Knežević's safety. This is best supported by the fact that every time Mr. Duško Knežević leaves the detention cell, it takes place in the presence of the head of the shift and the security team, with full security measures, which mean that at that moment in the corridors of the institution, in the corridor through which he passes, there is no one but him and of the aforementioned team," Milović said.
He added that Knežević's request to be transferred to collective accommodation was not approved precisely for reasons of his safety.
According to the Ministry of Justice, Vukčević informed the legal team that Knežević has the right to submit a request for the approval of certain technical devices that are allowed by the regulations, and which enable a more comfortable stay in the detention unit.
Speaking about the conditions in which Knežević is, Vukčević explained that the food in UIKS is checked and of good quality, that in addition, detainees have the right to a canteen, but that Knežević decided to have food delivered to him through a person authorized by him.
"As for the hygiene of the cell, the detainees are responsible for it, and the institution has a practice of providing every detainee, including Mr. Knežević, with all the necessary means to maintain cleanliness, if they are not able to afford it," said Vukčević.
Milović and Vukčević, the statement says, emphasized that Montenegro is committed to respecting the rights of all prisoners, and that guaranteeing their safety is a priority.
