The Deputy President of the Judicial Council, Dražen Medojević, told "Vijesti" that the body will most likely not immediately publish a new advertisement for the President of the Supreme Court, but will wait for changes to the Law on the Judicial Council and Judges.
He announced that the Judicial Council will have a meeting tomorrow (Friday, May 17) where they will agree on whether to immediately announce a public advertisement or to wait for legal changes, which would facilitate the election of the most important position in the judicial system.
"Our basic position is to wait for the amendments to the Law on the Judicial Council and Judges, as they are in the final procedure and are expected to be adopted soon. Based on the data so far, the amendments will facilitate the election of the President of the Supreme Court, as the draft plans to have more candidates who will be sent to the Judicial Council, and half the support of the judges at the General Session of the Supreme Court will be needed instead of the current two-thirds," Medojević said.
The final agreement will be reached at the session of the Judicial Council, where, through current issues, the members of the council will deal with the date of announcing a new public advertisement for the president of the Supreme Court.
At today's General Session of the Supreme Court, the proposal of a candidate for the president of the umbrella court instance was not determined. The Supreme Court will immediately notify the Judicial Council of the failed procedure.
Judge of the Supreme Court, Ana Vuković, but neither President of the Administrative Court, Miodrag Pešić, received two-thirds support from the total number of judges at the General Session of the Supreme Court.
"17 judges participated in the work of the General Session. After a secret vote, in which 16 judges participated, it was determined that there were 11 valid and five invalid ballots," the Supreme Court officially announced.
Judge Ana Vuković, who did not exercise her right to vote during the secret proceedings, was voted for by six colleagues, while Miodrag Pešić was supported by five judges of the Supreme Court.
This also failed the eighth attempt to elect the president of the Supreme Court, which has not had a full-term head since the end of 2020, when longtime president Vesna Medenica left the position.
Vesna Vučković heads the Supreme Court in an acting mandate from September 2021.
