Duško Jovanović is a symbol of courage and the fight for justice, and that is why we as a society are obliged to dedicate ourselves to the complete elucidation of his murder, said the president of Prava Montenegro, Marko Milačić.
"Discovering and prosecuting all perpetrators and principals is not only a legal imperative, but also a moral obligation. Only when all those responsible are brought to justice will we be able to talk about true and complete justice and freedom in Montenegro," reads the press release of Prava's media team. of Montenegro signed by Milačić.
He recalled that on this day, in 2004, "Duško Jovanović, a man who fearlessly spoke the truth at a time when many were silent out of fear, was brutally murdered."
"Although two decades have passed, justice has not yet been served and his murder has not been solved. The memory of Duško Jovanović obliges us as a society to contribute so that such and similar events never happen again. It is necessary to work on creating a safer environment for the work of journalists, because media freedom is the foundation of every democratic society," he added.
Milačić emphasized that Prava Montenegro took an important step in terms of creating, as he said, a safer environment for the work of journalists, "by proposing changes to the Criminal Code, which the Parliament of Montenegro adopted."
"These changes prescribe harsher penalties for murder and attacks on journalists, with the aim of taking preventive action and preventing similar cases in the future. These measures are not only legal frameworks, but also a clear message that Montenegro must not tolerate violence against journalists and that it will all those who try to stifle free speech face serious consequences," he added.
Milačić pointed out that because of Duško Jovanović, "and all those who risked or lost their lives for the truth, we must continue our fight for true freedom and democracy."
"May his courage and dedication to justice be an inspiration and encouragement to us to never give up on the goals of a just and free society," he concluded.
