The detention of former police chief Veselin Veljović was terminated by the decision of the Podgorica High Court.
At the same time, he was ordered to stay in the apartment.
This was done after medical expert Nemanja Radojević, by order of the court, examined his state of health today, after which he gave his opinion.
One of his legal representatives, lawyer Mihailo Volkov, said that someone finally looked into his health condition.
After the expert testimony, Veljović addressed the court and spoke about his poor health, stating that he "drank 170 bottles of antibiotics" in the last month alone...
The former director of the Police Administration was arrested on July 24, 2023, on suspicion of divulging an official secret.
SDT believes that Veljović was a member of the criminal group of fugitive Aleksandar Mrkić, which was blamed for smuggling large quantities of cigarettes.
During his stay in custody, Veljović had serious health problems, for which he was treated in hospital on two occasions.
Lawyer Nikola Martinović said that "procedural and humane reasons have been met for Veljović's detention to be lifted".
"I submitted evidence dating back 5-6 years, it is about Veselin Veljović's medical history. He must not stay in the conditions in which he is staying because his life is threatened to the point of death," said Martinović.
The Prosecutor's Office accuses Veljović of using confidential information to help the head of a criminal organization, Aleksandar Mrkić, to smuggle cigarettes.
The indictment was brought against Aleksandar Mrkić, Veselin Veljović, Arsenij Kalezić, Muj Nikočević, Nikola Mrkić, Željko Bulatović, Dušica Bulatović, Predrag Veljić, Borislav Lečić, Nemanja Anđelković, Goran Gluščević, Nikola Bačilović, Sadig Elnagar, Nikola Bubanja and Stefan Bubanja.
At today's hearing, the lawyers requested the termination of custody for all the accused, but the custody was terminated only for Veljović.
Neither the accused Nikola Bubanja nor his lawyer appeared at the hearing, and the judges explained that they had previously been provided with medical documentation according to which the accused's health was not good enough to appear before the court.
The special state prosecutor, Vukas Radonjić, replied that "the prosecution believes that he was able to attend, based on the medical documentation, so they believe that the court must forcibly bring the convicted person".
The Council of Judges, presided over by Kovačević, ordered that within the next 15 days, the parts concerning the accused be extracted from the material submitted to the court and the correspondence.
The next hearing is scheduled for October 8.
