The Hamburg authorities seized 2.109 kilograms of cocaine, which arrived at the port there by ship at the end of last week, and was hidden in packages of bananas, in a container from Ecuador.
According to the chief state prosecutor Jörga Fröhlicha, the drug container arrived at the port of Hamburg, and was then transported by truck to the X-ray station for customs inspection.
According to the knowledge of "Vijesti", the police in Bavaria and the German Customs had confidential information that the container was contaminated with cocaine, which is why they followed the truck transporting it.
On the way to the X-ray station, the truck stopped at a warehouse, where the boxes were supposed to be opened and filled with bananas, and the cocaine was retrieved.
While the suspects were trying to unload drugs worth more than 100 million euros in the warehouse of a shipping company, the local Special Unit (SEK) intervened and arrested 12 suspects.
Among those arrested are persons of German, Turkish, Afghan, Iraqi, Albanian, Syrian and Indian nationality, most of whom have a registered residence in Hamburg.
The German media reported that the senator for internal affairs of Hamburg, Endi Grote (SPD), said that their security services dealt a significant blow to organized drug-related crime.
The head of the Hamburg police Falk Šnabel at a press conference he described the action as a "visible success" in an attempt to increase security at the port.
Michael Šrader, the director of the main customs administration in Hamburg, stated that there is currently "enormous pressure to import cocaine" into Germany.
