Montenegrin citizens voluntarily returned and surrendered 70 firearms, 3724 pieces of ammunition, five hand grenades, detonator caps, explosives, gunpowder, detonating agents and firearm parts yesterday (Saturday), the Police Directorate (UP) announced.
"We would like to remind you that our citizens have a significant number of firearms whose owners were their family members or relatives, who unfortunately passed away in the previous period. Keeping such weapons by the family, regardless of whether or not a probate procedure has been conducted before the competent court, in accordance with the Law on Weapons, is punishable and constitutes an illegal weapon, until one of the legal heirs obtains a permit to keep such weapons from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. For all of the above, such weapons must be returned to the competent organizational unit for administrative affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, until a permit to keep weapons is obtained in the name of one of the legal heirs or in the same way, if the family does not want to keep these weapons. In any case, the only correct and unpunishable thing is not to keep such weapons in their homes," the statement reads.
The Police Department said that yesterday, in the territory under the jurisdiction of the Regional Security Center "Centar", in Podgorica, Danilovgrad, Tuzi and Cetinje, citizens voluntarily handed over 34 weapons to the police, of which 17 pistols and 17 rifles and 1333 pieces of ammunition of various types and calibers.
Officers of the Regional Security Center "South" in Bar, Herceg Novi, Kotor, Ulcinj and Budva voluntarily returned 14 firearms, 1309 pieces of ammunition of various types and calibers, weapon parts and explosive devices.
In the northern region of the country, in the territory under the jurisdiction of the Regional Security Center "North", in Bijelo Polje, Mojkovac and Plav, a total of eight firearms were voluntarily surrendered, of which two pistols and six rifles, 580 rounds of ammunition, two bombs and four weapon frames.

Police officers of the Regional Security Center "West" in Nikšić and Pljevlja voluntarily surrendered 14 firearms, including seven rifles and seven pistols, 502 pieces of ammunition, three weapon frames, three hand grenades, 4,5 kg of explosives, nine pieces of detonator caps, 15 m of slow-burning fuse and 1 kg of black powder.
As announced, since the beginning of January, a total of 1144 firearms, 37.018 pieces of ammunition, 123 hand grenades, as well as several parts of weapons and explosive devices have been voluntarily surrendered to the Police Directorate.
"The Police Department appeals to all citizens to contribute to the overall security of society and to surrender firearms, ammunition and explosives in their possession, without any legal, criminal or misdemeanor liability and regardless of whether they possess the weapon illegally or legally. Citizens can call the police on 122, inform police officers that they want to return the weapon, after which the police officer will take the weapon at the location where the person or weapon is located and issue a receipt for taking it over," the statement said.
"It is important to note that citizens should not bring weapons to police stations themselves, primarily for safety reasons. The Police Directorate will continue to implement increased preventive and repressive activities as part of the current campaign, in order to preserve the safety, health and lives of citizens, and we hereby encourage citizens to build a safe environment for everyone through cooperation and responsible behavior," the police said.
