Montenegrin citizens voluntarily returned 48 firearms, 4.962 pieces of ammunition, nine hand grenades, explosive devices and weapon parts to the police on Wednesday, the Police Directorate announced.
The weapons and ammunition were returned as part of the "Respect Life, Return Weapons" campaign, which the Police Directorate has been implementing for many years.
"In Podgorica, Danilovgrad and Cetinje, citizens voluntarily handed over 23 weapons to the police on Wednesday, of which 20 were pistols and three rifles, as well as 3.755 pieces of ammunition of various types and calibers," the statement said.
It is stated that eight firearms, including two rifles and six pistols, 778 pieces of ammunition and nine hand grenades, were voluntarily returned to police officers in Bar, Ulcinj, Kotor and Tivat.
"A total of eight firearms were voluntarily surrendered in Bijelo Polje, Berane, Rožaje and Mojkovac, of which four rifles and four pistols, 125 pieces of ammunition, one mine and weapon parts," the police said.
They said that nine firearms, four of which were rifles and five pistols, as well as 304 rounds of ammunition, were voluntarily handed over to their officers in Nikšić and Pljevlja.
"Since the beginning of January, a total of 2.440 weapons, 82.176 pieces of ammunition, 259 hand grenades, as well as several hundred weapon parts and explosive devices have been voluntarily surrendered to the Police Directorate," the statement said.
The police reminded that keeping weapons owned by family members or relatives, regardless of whether or not probate proceedings have been conducted before the competent court, constitutes an illegal weapon under the Weapons Act, unless one of the legal heirs obtains a permit to keep them from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
"Citizens can call the police at 122, inform police officers that they want to return the weapon, without any legal, criminal or misdemeanor liability and regardless of whether the weapon is in illegal or legal possession," the police said.
