The United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, has expressed concern over the arrest of human rights defender Dinara Smailova in Montenegro and possible extradition.

She indicated that Smailova faces criminal charges in Kazakhstan that could constitute retaliation for her legitimate human rights work.

She welcomed yesterday's decision by the Higher Court in Podgorica to release Smailova to defend herself from prison.

"We are closely monitoring the further course of the proceedings and expect a swift decision on her asylum application," Mary Lawlor wrote on X.

Smailova was arrested two days ago in Budva, on the order of the investigating judge of the Higher Court in Podgorica, and upon Kazakhstan's request for extradition for the purpose of conducting criminal proceedings against her.
