The Basic State Prosecutor's Office (ODT) in Pljevlja has opened a case regarding the temporary seizure of around 40 thousand euros at the Ranče border crossing point (BP), ahead of last week's local elections in Nikšić and Herceg Novi.
The ODT told "Vijesti" that a case has been formed "in which all necessary measures and actions are being taken to determine whether the actions of any person contain elements of a criminal offense that is prosecuted ex officio, and for which this prosecutor's office is competent to act."
On April 10, the Police Directorate seized around 40 thousand euros at the Ranče border crossing.
"The money was temporarily seized for further checks," the Police Directorate told "Vijesti" a day later, answering questions about whether it was true that 40.000 euros were seized at the "Ranče" border checkpoint, whether the purpose of bringing the money had been determined, or whether it was for the needs of the elections held on April 13, as claimed by representatives of the European Union.
The police then told the newspaper that, as part of increased controls at border crossings, police and customs officers checked two vehicles "containing five people, Montenegrin citizens, at the Ranče border crossing, upon entering Montenegro."
"A search of their possessions found money, the amount of which did not exceed 10.000 euros for four individuals, except for one person, who had 10.035 euros and 2.180 dinars," they stated.
Nikola Zirojević, a candidate on the European Alliance list in the elections in Nikšić, previously said at a press conference that, "as far as they know", the money was intended "for the needs of Marko Kovačević's election campaign".
Kovačević was the leader of the list "For the Future of Nikšić", which won 14.381 votes (34,64 percent or 15 seats) in the elections on Sunday, and there is a good chance that it will form a government with partners from the state government, the Europe Now Movement and the Democrats.
