The Police Directorate has warned citizens not to respond to emails that arrive from addresses that falsely present themselves as official police addresses, and whose aim, as announced, is exclusively financial fraud.

The police said that in recent days, there has been a renewed trend of sending fake emails from addresses that falsely represent themselves as official addresses of the Police Directorate, in order to deceive citizens through false claims about the initiation of investigations, summonses for questioning, or alleged accusations of criminal offenses.

"The goal of such messages is exclusively financial fraud, so that perpetrators can obtain personal data, banking information, or induce citizens to pay money or share sensitive information," the police said.

As they recalled, similar attempts at abuse were recorded during 2022 and last year, both in Montenegro and in the region and Europe.

In previous cases, the statement points out, the Police Directorate identified the sources of the disputed emails, which came from outside the territory of Montenegro.

"The procedure is ongoing and is being carried out in cooperation with international partners and competent prosecutors' offices," the police said.

They urged citizens not to respond to such messages, not to open links and attachments, and to immediately delete suspicious emails.
