Acting on an international arrest warrant issued by the Interpol NCB Podgorica, South African police officers arrested Montenegrin citizen Ivan Cicmil (34) in the city of Boksburg.
A statement from the Police Directorate (UP) states that Cicmil is a high-ranking member of an organized crime group (OKG) from Montenegro.
The Police Department said that "Montenegro has issued an Interpol red notice for IC in order to ensure his presence in criminal proceedings being conducted against him before the High Court in Podgorica on suspicion that he committed the criminal offenses of creating a criminal organization and illegal possession of weapons and explosives."
The statement also states that Cicmil was hiding in South Africa and that he was arrested in that country under a false identity, for committing a crime related to the abuse and smuggling of narcotics.
"The aforementioned activity is the result of close and intensive operational cooperation between the competent services of the Crime Prevention Sector, namely the Interpol NCB Podgorica, and international partners, which resulted in the discovery of data on the forged travel documents of the aforementioned person, which resulted in his location and deprivation of liberty in the Republic of South Africa," the statement reads.
The Police Department said that further communication will follow between the judicial authorities of Montenegro and the Republic of South Africa, namely the Interpol NCB Podgorica and the Interpol NCB Pretoria, with the aim of implementing the extradition.
