Police officers have arrested and filed criminal charges against a foreign citizen, KM (31), suspected of human smuggling, the Police Directorate announced.
It is reported that the mixed operational police team for dismantling migrant smuggling networks (TimSM) has shed light on the smuggling of five Tunisian citizens from Montenegro to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
"A criminal complaint has been filed against KM, a dual citizen of Pakistan and Afghanistan, on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of illegal border crossing and human smuggling," the police said.
It is suspected that KM committed the criminal offense he is charged with on April 21st in the early evening hours when he facilitated transit for five Tunisian citizens, who were granted residence in Montenegro based on their work at a hotel in Budva.
The police said that it is suspected that KM bought them tickets for a train running on the Podgorica-Nikšić line and then transported them from Nikšić to a location on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"Where he transferred them to BiH outside the border crossing, for an agreed financial benefit of EUR 150 per person, which was to be paid to him later," the statement said.
Police said that evidence was collected against KM, which resulted in the identification and tracking of the suspect, his arrest, and the filing of criminal charges.
"By breaking up the networks of migrant smugglers operating through our territory and the wider "Balkan Route", Montenegro is making its own contribution to overall regional and European security," the statement said.
It is stated that the continuation of strategically focused and operationally precise activities will be crucial for preserving the security of the citizens of Montenegro and that the institutions of the system will further intensify efforts to achieve measurable results in the fight against this complex security challenge.
