The Court of Appeal will not discuss the serious traffic accident in which Filip Vučeljić (17) and his one-year-old brother Andrija Novaković lost their lives today, because the person convicted of the accident, Jovan Dubljević (21), did not appear in the courtroom.
That traffic accident occurred on December 31, 2023, in which Vučeljić and Novaković were killed, and Edin Kerović suffered serious injuries.
According to the indictment, the accident occurred at around 21 p.m. on Vilija Branta Boulevard in the Podgorica neighborhood of Zlatica. Dubljević was driving a "Golf" car, license plate PG-LM476, at a speed of 112 kilometers per hour in a 60-kilometer-per-hour zone, and ran a red light. He then crashed into a "Honda Civic" vehicle, license plate LJ04VNS, driven by Filip Vučeljić.
Vučeljić died at the scene, while his co-driver, Andrija Novaković, succumbed to his injuries on January 4 and died at the Clinical Center of Montenegro (KCCG).
The court found that Dubljević knowingly drove at a speed significantly higher than the permitted speed limit, as well as that he ran a red light, thereby endangering traffic safety and showing extreme carelessness. It was found that he acted with possible intent - he was aware that there could be consequences, but he lightly assumed that they would not occur.
"In deciding on the sentence, the High Court considered as mitigating circumstances that Dubljević was a young adult at the time he committed the crime, he was 19 years old at the time, he had no previous convictions and he expressed regret. The aggravating circumstances were that he was driving at a speed of 112 km/h, while the permitted speed is 60 km/h, and that two people were killed, one seriously injured," Judge Padalica said earlier.
The representative of the injured parties, the Vučeljić and Novaković families, lawyer Dragoljub Petrović, told the media after the verdict that the sentence was lenient.
"In my opinion, this sentence is too lenient because when you consider that two young lives were lost, everything is clear to you. I am not sure that this sentence will sufficiently influence other drivers to drive more carefully and not commit traffic crimes," he said.
