Even an international arrest warrant failed to help arrest Mijat Beljkaš (28), accused of the death of Ivica Božović (41), after five years. The police also failed to trace the car he is suspected of using to hit Božović.
Božović was hit by a car on October 29, 2020 at 19.07:XNUMX p.m. while crossing Stanko Dragojevića Boulevard at a zebra crossing.
According to police and prosecutorial documents, he was hit by Beljkaš with an Audi, who did not comply with traffic regulations, and then fled.
The forty-one-year-old succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
In the first hours of the investigation, the police received information from eyewitnesses that Božović was hit by the driver of an "Audi A6" with license plate (PG-JA381).
They also told the police officers to which part of the city the "Audi" fled, but the inspectors did not find it. A little later, it was established that the suspect's family members were preventing the authorities from finding the culprit.
Although the police claimed half a year after the accident that they knew where the suspect Mijat Beljkaš was hiding, they never handcuffed him.
Responding to "Vijesti" from the Police Directorate, they said that immediately upon learning about the incident, they took measures and actions within their jurisdiction:
"An on-site investigation was conducted, traces were seized, video surveillance was examined and the vehicle 'Audi A6', with Podgorica license plates, was identified. Information was collected from several persons, who ultimately identified him as the suspect MB from Podgorica. The Police Directorate - Security Department Podgorica continuously took measures and actions to locate and detain the person MB, against whom a criminal report was filed with the Basic State Prosecutor's Office in Podgorica on suspicion of committing a criminal offense of serious offense against public traffic safety, in conjunction with the criminal offense of failure to provide assistance to a person injured in a traffic accident, while a criminal report was filed with the prosecutor's office against the person M. B, the brother of the suspect MB, on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of preventing the production of evidence," the Police Directorate said at the beginning of July.
Matija Beljkaš (35), was prosecuted in April 2021 for concealing evidence of a crime committed by his brother Mijat.
A little later, he was sentenced to three months in prison on charges that he made it difficult for prosecutors and the police to find the "Audi" that hit Božović, or that he hid it in order to help his brother after the accident.
By the verdict of the judge of the Basic Court in Podgorica, Larisa Stamatović-Mijušković, he was found guilty of hiding a car between October 30th, around 22 p.m., and November 6th, 2020, around 23.30:XNUMX p.m.
The Police Directorate told "Vijesti" that they are still searching for Mijat Beljkaš and the vehicle he used to hit Božović.
"A local warrant was issued for MB on November 2, 11, followed by a national warrant on July 2020, 7, and an international warrant was issued on May 7, 2022. The search for this person and the vehicle that was the subject of the criminal offense is still ongoing," they explained.
