The Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT) opened 18 war crimes cases in the first six months of this year, six of which have been completed, the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office (SDT) announced.
The State Prosecutor's Office said that during that period, the State Prosecutor's Office implemented 96,3 percent of the activities envisaged in the Strategy for the Investigation of War Crimes 2024-2027, which, they stated, is a confirmation of the institutional commitment to processing war crimes and strengthening judicial cooperation in the region.
"During the aforementioned period, 18 war crimes cases were opened in the SDT, of which 12 are ongoing, while six cases have been completed," the statement said.
It is stated that in four of the six completed cases, letters rogatory were processed within the framework of international legal assistance in criminal matters, one case was archived with an official note, and one was submitted to the Higher Court in Podgorica for competent processing.
It is added that from the previous period, there are 13 cases in the preliminary investigation phase and one in the investigation phase, while indictments have been filed in two cases.
It is emphasized that the proactive approach to prosecuting war crimes, based on the Strategy for Investigating War Crimes adopted by the State Prosecutor's Office, has also been recognized by international partners.
The VDT recalled that the latest non-paper of the European Commission on chapters 23 and 24 highlighted that Montenegro, thanks to the improved proactive approach of the prosecutorial authorities, continues to build a credible and sustainable record in the investigation, prosecution and trial of war crimes cases, including high-level cases.
As they said, the report on the Implementation of the War Crimes Investigation Strategy for the first two quarters of this year, adopted at the session of the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office, presents in detail and comprehensively the implemented activities, including the adoption of the Action Plan for the Morinj, Bukovica, Kaluđerski laz and deportation cases.
It is stated that this was done with the aim of analyzing legally concluded cases, reviewing available evidence, possibly obtaining new evidence, and considering legal options for further action.
"The Prosecutor's Office continues to improve cooperation with international institutions and non-governmental organizations dealing with transitional justice and justice for victims of war crimes," the statement added.
