The group gathered around Miloš Medenica consulted an astrologer, seeking an answer to the question of when the "heavens are favorable" for them to start an illegal cigarette smuggling business.
This emerges from the messages that the accused of creating a criminal organization exchanged with the other accused, Marko Vucinić, via the once-protected Sky phone application.
"This godfather's astrologer looked at it, we're starting to work on cigars in March. And everything else is tip-top. He asked everything directly. Well, she could miss a month or two, because the minute of birth is not exact, that's how it is, it drove me crazy. I ran away to sleep, it affects everything. It affected everything for me, I'm in shock...", he wrote to his godfather on December 14, 2020.
The Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT) filed an indictment against Miloš and his mother Vesne Medenica, the long-time president of the Supreme Court, as well as several other individuals and companies from Nikšić, for a series of serious crimes.
In the continuation of the cigarette smuggling deal, Medenica informs his godfather that the same astrologer had also guessed everything regarding a certain Petar, and that she had advised them.
"You won't believe how she guessed for Petar. Wow. She herself said that we should give money to a tall man with a beard, because we get it back many times over. No one can do that without Petar. Basically, in these two days we are coming out of some madness that has been going on since this time last year," Medenica sends.
The criminal group gathered around Miloš Medenica is charged with creating a criminal organization, aggravated smuggling, aggravated bribery, bribery, unlawful influence and incitement to unlawful influence, abuse of official position, unauthorized production, possession and distribution of narcotics, facilitating the consumption of narcotics, unauthorized possession of weapons and explosives, grievous bodily harm, and obstruction of evidence.
The indictment also includes Vučinić, police officers Darko Lalović i Milorad Medenica, customs officers Ivana Kovačević i Goran Jovanovic, a judge Milica Vlahovic-Milosavljevic, Vasilije Petrović, Bojan i Marko Popovic, Port of Bakoč, Petar Milutinović, Radomir Raičević, Marjan Bevenja, Stevo Karanikic, Nikola Raičević and the company "Kopad Company" from Nikšić...
New job
A month or so after that, in the midst of correspondence about "finalizing" the verdicts, the two of them talk about finding money for the job, and during one of the conversations, Medenica announces that he will borrow money if they can't manage.
Then the godfather mentions that he is Baranin. Goran Milašinović offered to enter into a new "business" in which they would not "get their hands on" the goods.
"We should, brother... We won't bring those goods into our hands. Brother, that's all they'll do, we'll just pass the goods on. We won't bring them in, nor look at them," he wrote.
He also explains to Vučinić that this "goods" will travel from Panama to Gioia di Tauro...
After his interlocutor objects and asks him not to mention him in the negotiations with Milašinović, Medenica tries to find a way to get out of those negotiations:
"I told him I didn't have any money, and he said he would lend me some, that he always had that much in his pillowcase."
Then he asks for advice on how to cool Milašinović's offer and complains: "Our mother is whining, we will remain barefoot and naked... What should I say to this guy, tell me? Because he said he would lend me money," Medenica writes.
On the same day, January 24, 2021, he consults with Vučinić whether it is okay to ask Milašinović for details, in order to decide whether to work with him...
From the messages he sent that day, it appears that he regretted the negotiations with Milašinović, but that he could not "get out" of it:
"A foreign company, the goods are going to China. I misjudged him to go... Are there any consequences if I get involved, other than the money I'm going to lose? I'd give him a garage, bro, if I lose, and he's asking to buy in that building where I have it because he bought a big apartment there... And I don't know how much money it would take to make it, but for me it would be ugh, or I could lose the garage"...
Special prosecutors opened an investigation into this criminal group after Europol provided Montenegrin investigators with intercepted conversations from the once protected Sky app, which revealed that it was "finalizing" court cases, smuggling cigarettes...
Suspected of being a member of his crime crew, his mother Vesna Medenica was arrested in mid-April 2022 at the Podgorica airport while trying to travel to Belgrade.
Miloš Medenica surrendered to the Montenegrin police on May 25, 2022.
This criminal group is being tried before a special chamber of the Higher Court in Podgorica, and the main trial has been postponed more than 20 times.
