In the Remand Prison, 107 detainees are on a hunger strike and their current health condition is stable, the Public Relations Service of the Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions (UIKS) announced.
UIKS states that a total of 129 detained persons express certain disagreements regarding the conditions of their accommodation and court proceedings.
"As previously announced, detainees participating in the hunger strike are provided with comprehensive and continuous health care. In relation to the above, medical staff continuously monitors their health condition, with a special focus on monitoring vital parameters. We emphasize that all persons participating in the strike are under constant supervision, and that their current health condition is stable. The Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions continues to implement all necessary measures in order to protect the health of detainees, and in this regard, to maintain order and security in the Administration," said UIKS.
The detainees' strike began a few days after a visit by the President of the Higher Court, Zoran Radović, when they complained about prison conditions and the denial of bail. In a statement, they stated that due to the violation of the law and the right to a fair trial, they are suspending legal aid and trials, while their families will protest in front of the institutions.
Supreme Court President Valentina Pavličić said that everyone has the right to protest, but not to obstruct the work of the courts, emphasizing that decisions are made in accordance with the law and that any attempt at illegality will be sanctioned.
In a new letter, the detainees claim that they are not obstructing the proceedings, but are on strike due to long-standing dissatisfaction and inequality before the law. They demand written answers to their demands and announce the cancellation of the power of attorney for their lawyers until they receive a clearly defined role for the defense. They expect Pavličić to decide whether the courts will judge according to the law or under political influence.
