US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested police officer Radul Bojović in the Chicago suburb of Hanover Park, accusing him of being an illegal immigrant from Montenegro.
The Department of Homeland Security announced that Bojović remained in the United States after his tourist visa expired in 2015, CNN reports.
According to the ministry, Bojović was "spotted during a targeted immigration enforcement action" as part of an ICE operation in Illinois.
The Hanover Park Police Department announced on Facebook in August that Bojovic had recently graduated from the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, adding that he had begun "an intensive 15 weeks of field training and assessment as he prepares to serve the Hanover Park community."
CNN has contacted Hanover Park Police for comment and attempted to reach Bojovic.
"Radule Bojovic violated the laws of our country and lived in the United States illegally for 10 years - what kind of police department gives criminal illegal immigrants badges and guns? It is a crime for foreigners to even possess a firearm. A police officer who actively violates the law," Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement to CNN.
In September, ICE agents also arrested the superintendent of Iowa's largest school district, accusing him of being in the country illegally since the early 2000s. He was later charged with separate firearms offenses.
