The Ministry of Justice announced today that the Minister of Justice does not give any instructions or guidelines to the courts, nor does he interfere in their work in any way.
As stated in a statement posted on Facebook, the Ministry of Justice reacted to allegations made to the media by certain detainees from the Spuž Remand Prison through their lawyers.
Detainees at the Spuž Remand Prison called on Justice Minister Bojan Božović earlier today to, as they stated, "provide conditions worthy of a man, which is his job, and not to exert pressure and give guidelines to the courts to fulfill his wishes."
"The Ministry has no knowledge of what the statements in the aforementioned statement specifically refer to, nor does it participate in processes that are within the jurisdiction of the judicial authorities. We would like to remind you that the courts are independent in their work, and that the role of the Ministry of Justice is exclusively to ensure normative and institutional conditions for the lawful and dignified treatment of all persons in the system of execution of criminal sanctions," the statement states.
They stressed that they are sorry if someone abuses the position of detainees for their own interests or political messages, because this does not contribute to solving real problems.
"The Minister of Justice will not debate this topic further," the Ministry of Justice statement concluded.
