Detainee Alekandar Keković began a hunger strike today in the premises of the Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions (UIKS), announced lawyer Nikolina Mišnić, whose client Keković is.
She said the act represented "his personal, extremely serious protest" over what he claims are unfair accusations by the Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT).
"My client firmly denies everything he has been charged with, especially any connection to any organized crime group, and believes that this is another in a series of attempts by the prosecution to frame him for committing crimes with which he has absolutely nothing to do. He emphasizes that he will not allow himself to spend days in custody for the umpteenth time for something he did not do," the statement reads.
"From the very beginning, he considers the way in which the prosecution and the police director presented his arrest in the media to be unfair because the information that he was arrested in an action is incorrect, as he himself explained in the statement he gave before the court. He also points out that it is not true that he was deprived of his liberty on 29.05.2025, but as he stated before the court on 09.05.2025, without any decision and the right to a lawyer, and which period was not included in his detention time, which means that he was in fact kidnapped," the lawyer adds.
Keković also says that the information that he was on the run is incorrect, because he left the country before the proceedings were initiated on November 20, 2022, as a free citizen, and that in accordance with the regulations of the United Arab Emirates, he received an ID card, driver's license, and residence and work permit and got a job.
In addition, the lawyer said that her client was never served with a summons to his address in Podgorica, nor was anyone informed of the initiation of proceedings against him.
"Finally, the acts with which my client is charged represent isolated acts in relation to the 'criminal plan' in the indictment and these acts cannot in any way be linked to the act in connection with which the group allegedly acted. For this reason, my client believes that he has strayed into this indictment. I would like to point out that for one of the two acts with which my client is charged, proceedings are ongoing before the Basic Court against other persons, while for the other criminal act, the proceedings by the ODT were concluded back in 2020. My client decided to take this step because he wants to draw public attention to, in his belief, serious irregularities in the proceedings against him. His goal is not to cause tension but to insist on the truth and a fair trial," the statement reads.
