The Police Directorate announced that it is carrying out extensive security preparations for the European Union (EU) - Western Balkans Summit to be held in Tivat, stating that more than 1,5 thousand police officers from all organizational units of the police have been engaged.
The police said that the summit represents an event of exceptional regional and international importance, a security event of the highest international rank, and one of the most complex gatherings organized in the modern history of Montenegro.
"With this in mind, the Police Directorate, in cooperation with partners from the intelligence and security sector and other competent institutions, has undertaken a comprehensive set of planning, preventive, operational, intelligence and coordination activities, engaging maximum human, technical and logistical capacities to ensure the highest level of security for all participants in the event, citizens and institutions," the statement said.
It is stated that, in order to adequately respond to the complex security requirements of that event, over 1,5 thousand police officers from all organizational units of the Police Directorate, including tactical units, were engaged.
The activities, as stated by the police, are being implemented in full coordination and cooperation with the National Security Agency, the Ministry of Defense, other agencies and state administration bodies, local government bodies and services, health institutions and international partners.
"The Police Directorate is undertaking extensive and complex activities of security assessment, planning and securing all locations intended for the stay, work and movement of delegations, with a special focus on preventive activities, intelligence and security work, counter-sabotage inspections and control of the area, protection of critical infrastructure, control and surveillance of the state border, cybersecurity, as well as maintaining stable public order," the statement says.
The police stated that in carrying out these activities, they will use modern technical means and specialized equipment intended for securing high-security events and protecting protected individuals, including video surveillance systems, drones and other strategic systems.
"Given the number of participants and the complexity of security procedures, during the summit, on Thursday and Friday, enhanced and restrictive security measures will be applied, which include an increased presence of police officers in the field, increased checks on persons and vehicles, temporary restrictions on access to certain locations, as well as temporary suspensions and redirections of traffic on certain roads during the arrival, departure and movement of international delegations," the statement said.
The police said that during the summit, the part of the Porto Montenegro complex that is included in the security zone will be under a special restricted access regime, while the remaining part of the complex will remain accessible to citizens and visitors.
As they stated, the operation of certain catering and other business facilities will be time-limited, or organized in accordance with the decisions and instructions of the competent inspection bodies.
"Also, during the summit, public gatherings, public performances and other events will not be allowed in the area covered by security measures, bearing in mind the need to maintain stable public order, the smooth implementation of security activities and the protection of event participants," the statement said.
The police called on citizens to be understanding, patient, and cooperate with the competent authorities during security activities.
"We are aware that the implementation of these measures may temporarily affect the daily functioning and movement of citizens, however, these are standard procedures that are implemented solely to ensure the safety of summit participants, citizens and the state," the Police Directorate said in a statement.
