Two Serbian citizens arrested for food smuggling

Border police officers in the town of Vuča, near the green border with Serbia, arrested citizens of that country, ET (34) and MP (51), on suspicion of smuggling food items worth around 3.100, which were found in a cargo vehicle without documentation of origin.

"Police officers stopped a Mercedes freight vehicle with Novi Pazar license plates on a side road for inspection, driven by ET (34), a citizen of the Republic of Serbia. The cargo compartment of the vehicle contained a large quantity of goods - food items, worth around 3.100 euros, for which this person did not have documentation of origin," the police statement said.

The police said that the measures and actions taken subsequently indicated suspicion that the goods were purchased on our territory on the so-called gray market, and that they were intended for smuggling across the border to Serbia for further sale.

"ET was deprived of his liberty, as was MP (51), also a citizen of the Republic of Serbia, who appeared on the scene a few minutes after the start of the police control and who stated that the goods and the vehicle belonged to him, and that he had hired ET for the described actions, i.e. smuggling. The state prosecutor at the Basic State Prosecutor's Office in Rožaje was informed about the incident, who qualified the offense as a criminal offense and on whose order the persons were deprived of their liberty," the statement reads.

The suspects ET and MP were brought before the relevant state prosecutor, with a criminal complaint, the police said.
