Minić: It is unacceptable for any journalist to be exposed to threats

The President of the Democratic Women's Forum, Valentina Minić, announced that the party strongly condemns the continuous threats, insults, hate speech and public targeting of "Vijesti" journalist Jelena Jovanović, which represents a serious attack on media freedom, the right to free expression and the safety of all journalists in Montenegro.

According to her, the fact that a discrediting campaign has been waged against the journalist for years is particularly worrying.

"...During which serious accusations are made without any evidence, slander is spread and an atmosphere of lynching is encouraged, which directly threatens her safety, dignity and right to perform her professional work without hindrance," Minić pointed out.

As she stated, in a democratic society it is unacceptable for any journalist to be exposed to threats, misogynistic insults, public labeling as an enemy of the state, or calls for retaliation for their investigative and professional work.

"Criticism of the work of the media is legitimate, but hate speech, threats and attempts at intimidation represent a limit that no responsible society should tolerate. The Democrats fully support Jelena Jovanović and all media workers who, despite pressure and threats, professionally and responsibly perform their work in the interest of the public. Free journalism is one of the foundations of a democratic society, and the protection of journalists is the obligation of all institutions and responsible social actors," she concluded.
