Jovanović: Attacks on "Vijesti" journalist must be met with clear and unequivocal condemnation

"The latest attacks directed at "Vijesti" journalist Jelena Jovanović are unacceptable from a human, professional, or social standpoint, and as such must be met with clear and unequivocal condemnation," said the Mayor of Budva Municipality, Nikola Jovanović.

He emphasized that he is following with particular concern the way in which some communication on online platforms and social networks is turning into a space of crude insults, threats, and attempts at intimidation.

"Free and professional journalism is one of the pillars of a modern democratic society, and it is up to us as a local government to set a clear example that in a city based on openness, tourism and multiculturalism, there is no place for hate speech, threats and intimidation," Jovanović pointed out.

He added that he was sorry "that we are witnessing situations like this, unfortunately, being repeated."

"Both the state and society must be consistent and principled in condemning and dealing with such phenomena, both when journalists are targeted, and when they are representatives of civil society, public officials and other actors in public life, against whom campaigns of insults, threats and disparagement are being waged. Any selectivity in reactions sends the wrong message and undermines trust in institutions," he said.

Jovanović called on the competent authorities to urgently and thoroughly take all necessary measures to identify the perpetrators and establish their legal responsibility, in accordance with applicable regulations.

"I expect the institutions of the system to clearly demonstrate that any attack of this type is unacceptable, regardless of who it is directed at. As the mayor of Budva Municipality, I express my support for journalist Jelena Jovanović, as well as all professionals and activists who contribute to the public interest with their work," he concluded.
