The non-governmental organization (NGO) 35mm announced that it provides full support to journalist Jelena Jovanović after the latest wave of threats, insults, and public targeting to which she has been exposed for years due to her professional work.
"When accusations are made for years without evidence, when journalists are labeled as enemies, traitors or collaborators of criminal groups, it is no longer a matter of criticism or disagreement. Such campaigns create an atmosphere of lynching and further endanger the safety of people working in the public interest," the statement said.
According to them, the normalization of this behavior on social networks and the lack of clear social condemnation when journalists are targeted are particularly concerning.
"We expect the competent institutions to act seriously, without delay and without relativizing the threats, and to provide effective protection to our colleague. A society that remains silent in the face of threats to journalists agrees that fear is stronger than the truth," 35mm concluded.
